Career

Basketball player Bryce Harper began his career as a player. He attended Las Vegas High School and was raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. In May 2009, he was compared to LeBron James on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

He obtained his GED in October 2009, allowing him to be eligible for the June 2010 MLB draft and start his professional baseball career sooner. In 2010, he participated in his first season as an NCAA Division I student-athlete, playing catcher for the College of Southern Nevada (SWAC, NJCAA).

Harper at the time was seventeen years old. Bryan, his older brother and former high school teammate, is a starting pitcher with the Southern Nevada Coyotes and often worked alongside him as a battery. When Harper made the move from college to professional baseball, he had an edge since the SWAC, like the MLB, employs wooden bats in conference play.

He batted.443 with an OBP of.526 and a slugging percentage of.987 for a batting average of.443 (SLG) in 66 games while hitting 31 home runs and driving in 98 runs. His 31 home runs destroyed the previous school record of 12, which was set in 2010.

In 2010, he was chosen as the SWAC Player of the Year. In the 2010 NJCAA World Series Western district finals, he went 6-for-7 with five RBIs and hit for the cycle. He went 2-for-5 with a three-run double in the first game of a doubleheader the following day, and 6-for-6 with four home runs, a triple, and a double in the second game.

On June 2 of that year, Don Gilmore benched him from the National Junior College World Series game because he had questioned the third strike ruling. He indicated where he thought the pitch was by using his bat to make a line in the dirt after leaving the plate.

He received a two-game suspension after being dismissed for the second time this season. Southern Nevada was disqualified from the tournament due to Harper’s suspension after they lost the game in which Harper was dismissed and their next game while Harper was banned. Harper received the 2010 Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the greatest amateur baseball player in the country each year.

The Washington Nationals selected him in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft. The Nationals selected him as an outfielder in order to extend his career and hasten his growth so that he might make his major league debut earlier.
